Inside the Transformation

Recharging Savannah

The grounds on which Plant Riverside District stands have been a significant part of Savannah’s story for centuries, as the home of the original Riverside Station. In 1912, the electric power plant was reimagined by the pioneering spirit of George Baldwin and engineers from Stone & Webster to become the most efficient plant in the south. It would continue to power Savannah for more than 92 years before its decommissioning in 2005.

Today, the plant is powering Savannah once again. What stands now represents the beauty of progress—connecting history to present, Savannah’s legendary river with its storied community, and all who visit, to the generations of our future.

A HISTORIC RENOVATION

Adaptive Reuse

Plant Riverside District sits on a landmark historic site. Prior to the Riverside Station, it was home to the city’s original freight port, connecting Savannah’s inland canals and rail yards to the shipping channel and Atlantic Ocean.

Ten years of revitalization has created the most significant expansion of Savannah’s urban core in modern history – over 670,000 square feet of mixed-use space including the historic Power Plant and twelve buildings, 1.5 acres of parks, plazas and public spaces, and 1,100 linear feet of public river walk.

Plant Riverside District is a testament to Richard C. Kessler’s commitment to improving communities and providing enriching experiences for locals and visitors alike.
